Written 20 September 2026 · measured, not promised

10 240 at once.

A measurement, not a number off a price list.

Every list of quiz tools for big rooms compares participant caps copied from pricing pages. None of them ran the room. We did, once, with scripted clients — and this page is mostly about what that run does not prove.

What we measured

10 240 synthetic clients in a single game, 13 September 2026. All 10 240 answers were registered and none were lost. The server sat at 65% of half a CPU core while it happened. The full run, including the three earlier runs that day and the bug we found between them, is on the load test page.

Synthetic means scripted connections, not people. No room of 10 240 humans has played klapp. The run was one session, in one region, over WebSocket only — the server-sent-events fallback was never load tested — and it ran before a running game was saved across a restart. Treat the figure as a measurement of the server, not as a guarantee about your all-hands.

There is no participant limit in the code, and that is a different sentence from unlimited. No paid tier raises a cap, because there is no cap to raise, and the quiz is free (what is free and what the catch is). The largest room anyone has actually observed is the synthetic one above.

Joining

Mentimeter's own guide for large events warns organisers that joining takes longer than you expect. Read 11 September 2026. A six-digit code and a browser is the shortest door we could build.

Accounts

A room of 400 people cannot make 400 accounts. Players need none here, and there is no download. What the server keeps is on privacy.

The network

Our run used one region and healthy connections. A conference wifi is not that. The same Mentimeter guide tells organisers to have a wifi backup, and that advice applies to us too.

The clock

In a big room the slowest reader decides the pace. Answering fast earns nothing here, and the host can wait for everyone instead of counting down.

What the lists compare, and what none of them did

They compare caps, and the caps disagree with themselves. Wayground's plans page says Unlimited participants while its own help centre gives 100 per session on Basic and up to 1,000 on Super and School & District; its business plans allow 150 on Essential and 1,000 on Pro. Both read on Wayground's own pages, 19 September 2026 — side by side on klapp and Wayground compared. When a vendor's two pages give two numbers, a listicle that quotes one of them is quoting a choice.

Kahoot's caps per account type are real, published, and not repeated here. They live on klapp and Kahoot compared with the help page each one came from and the date it was read. One number, one place: a cap copied to a second page is a cap that will be stale in two versions.

Nobody in that queue ran a load test. That is the whole reason this page exists. A cap on a pricing page is a commercial decision; a lost answer is an engineering fact, and the two are not measured the same way.

And the search numbers, since we looked them up. Over three months (20 June – 17 September 2026) Bing Webmaster Tools recorded 690 impressions for kahoot alternatives and 181 for kahoot alternative, while quiz for large group had too little data to show at all — read 20 September 2026. The sub-intent is visible anyway: triviamaker.com's own Kahoot Alternatives for Large Groups page sits in Bing's top ten for both of those phrases, read the same day. People ask; the phrase they ask with is not the one we would have guessed.

What Kahoot does better in a big room

It is built and sold for large rooms, and we are not yet. Kahoot sells plans for up to 5,000 live players and has run them for years with support behind them. We have one measurement, and a running game is saved and usually goes on after a restart, but that is not a promise. If your all-hands cannot be rescheduled, that difference is the one that matters.

It has a library, and a reason to sign in. A host can pick a ready-made game from Kahoot's Discover page instead of generating one, and keep what they made. Nothing is saved here: a set you liked is gone when the session ends.

Its accessibility work is documented, and ours is not audited. Kahoot publishes an accessibility page with two conformance reports, pairs every answer colour with a shape, and offers Unlimited time in its Accuracy mode. Read 19 September 2026. We pair colour with a direction for the same reason — four colours, measured — but nobody has audited us.

What this page does not claim

Not unlimited players. No limit in the code is not a promise that any number works. Above 10 240 nothing has been measured, and below it only once.

Not that 10 240 people have played. They were scripted clients in one region, in one session, over one transport. Anyone quoting the figure should quote that sentence with it.

Nothing about what a free Kahoot account can host. Those figures are on the Kahoot comparison with their source and date. This page does not carry a competitor's number it did not read itself.

And no customers. No company has run klapp at an all-hands, because the number of companies using it is zero. Who is building this is on about.

Questions

How many players can a klapp game hold? There is no limit in the code. The largest measured room is 10 240 scripted clients, 13 September 2026, with no answers lost.

Do players need accounts? No. A six-digit code and a browser. A name field exists, and the server uses it only when the host has said the room is adults only, which is not the default.

Does the room size change the price? No, and it never will — that one is decided as a rule rather than a plan. The quiz is free today. The one paid part, Q&A for a talk, is priced by how many answers the host chooses, never by how many people are in the room — see pricing.

How current is this page? Checked on 20 September 2026. Competitor figures are re-read weekly; when one changes, the change is written here with its date.
